Our Mission
At SmartCalorie, our mission is simple: cut through commercial noise, fad diets, and confusing nutritional claims to deliver clear, scientifically grounded energy expenditure calculations.
Whether your goal is fat loss, weight maintenance, or lean muscle gain, achieving results begins with understanding energy balance—the relationship between calories consumed and calories burned. We built SmartCalorie to make this fundamental metabolic science accessible, transparent, and completely free for everyone.
The Science Behind SmartCalorie
Many consumer fitness apps rely on outdated equations or opaque proprietary algorithms. SmartCalorie relies exclusively on peer-reviewed clinical research:
The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
Developed in 1990 by Dr. MD Mifflin and Dr. ST St Jeor, this formula remains the clinical benchmark for estimating Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in non-athletic and recreational populations. In systematic meta-analyses conducted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation demonstrated the highest predictive accuracy and the narrowest error range (estimating resting expenditure within ±10% for approximately 80% of individuals).
To compute your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), we integrate validated physical activity multipliers accounting for all four pillars of human energy expenditure:
- Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): ~60% to 70% of daily energy required to sustain vital organ functions at complete rest.
- Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT): ~15% to 20% burned through spontaneous daily movement, walking, and posture.
- Thermic Effect of Food (TEF): ~8% to 12% expended in digesting, absorbing, and processing dietary nutrients.
- Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT): ~5% to 15% expended through intentional sports, cardio, and resistance training.
Our Core Principles
Privacy by Design
Your biometric metrics (age, sex, height, weight) are computed directly in your browser. We never sell, log, or commercialize your personal health metrics.
Global Accessibility
Nutrition science belongs to everyone. SmartCalorie supports 10 languages and allows instant switching between Metric and US Customary units.
Practical Sustainability
We advocate for moderate, sustainable calorie adjustments (300–500 kcal deficits) rather than crash diets that damage metabolic health.
Clinical Safety First
Our tools enforce clear safety limits (e.g. 1,200 kcal floor for women, 1,500 kcal for men) to protect lean tissue and hormonal vitality.
